Typing Speed Benchmarks by Profession
What counts as fast depends on your job. Here are realistic targets across common roles.
The average adult types around forty WPM, which is perfectly adequate for casual use and light office work. For most knowledge jobs where typing is a tool rather than the task, anything above fifty WPM rarely becomes a bottleneck in your workflow.
Roles built around typing demand more. Administrative assistants and customer support agents benefit from sixty to eighty WPM to keep pace with high volumes, while transcriptionists and medical scribes often need ninety or more with exceptional accuracy to stay on schedule.
The most demanding is court reporting, which uses specialized stenotype machines reaching over two hundred WPM, though that is a different device entirely. For everyone else, setting a target twenty WPM above your current speed gives a motivating, reachable goal.
