A Beginner's 30-Day Plan to Learn Touch Typing

Dev Okafor 2 min read2026-05-04

Four weeks of structured practice can take you from hunt-and-peck to confident touch typing.

Week one is about the home row and nothing else. Spend fifteen minutes each day drilling ASDF and JKL; until your fingers return to them automatically. Resist the urge to look down, even when it slows you to a crawl. This week builds the anchor everything else depends on.

Weeks two and three expand outward to the top and bottom rows, one small group of keys at a time. Add numbers and basic punctuation only once the letter keys feel reliable. Accuracy is your only metric here; speed will arrive on its own as the patterns settle.

Week four shifts to real text. Type short paragraphs, quotes, and simple emails using only touch typing, even though it is tempting to revert to old habits for speed. By day thirty you will not be fast yet, but you will be a touch typist, and that foundation compounds for life.
