The Difference Between Gross and Net Typing Speed

Dev Okafor 2 min read2026-02-21

Two typists with the same gross speed can have wildly different real-world output. Errors are why.

Gross speed counts every keystroke you make within the time limit, treating mistakes as if they were correct. It is the flattering number, and the one that feels good in the moment, but it ignores the cost of every error you leave behind.

Net speed subtracts a penalty for each uncorrected error, producing a figure that reflects how much usable text you actually produced. This is the number that matters for real work, where a document full of typos is not finished, no matter how fast you typed it.

Train with both numbers visible. A large gap signals that you are sacrificing too much accuracy for speed. Narrowing that gap, rather than simply chasing a bigger gross number, is what turns a fast typist into a genuinely productive one.
