How to Measure WPM Accurately on a Typing Test

Words per minute looks simple, but raw WPM, net WPM, and the standard 5-character word all change your real score.

Words per minute, or WPM, is the universal benchmark for typing speed, yet almost nobody agrees on what a 'word' actually is. The industry standard defines a word as five characters, including spaces and punctuation. That means 'cyberspace' counts as two words, and a short word like 'cat' plus its trailing space counts as less than one. Understanding this is the first step to reading your results honestly.

Raw WPM measures every keystroke you make as if all of them were correct. Net WPM subtracts your errors, giving a far more realistic picture of usable speed. A typist cruising at 90 raw WPM but leaving a trail of mistakes might deliver only 70 net WPM once corrections are factored in. The gap between those two numbers is one of the most useful signals you have for training.

When you take a test on Online Typing Test, watch both numbers together. If your raw and net WPM are close, your accuracy is strong and you can safely push for more speed. If they diverge, slow down by ten percent and let your fingers rebuild clean muscle memory before accelerating again.
