How to Fix a Sticky or Chattering Key

J. Mercer 2 min read2026-02-12

A key that sticks or fires twice is maddening. Most cases are fixable at home in minutes.

A sticky key usually means debris has worked its way under the keycap or into the switch, physically obstructing the stem's travel. Pull the cap and blow out the switch with compressed air, then test the stem by pressing it directly. Often that alone restores smooth motion.

Key chatter, where one press registers as two or more, is trickier. It stems from a worn or dirty switch contact bouncing electrically. A careful cleaning with a drop of switch-safe cleaner sometimes cures it, but a persistently chattering switch usually needs replacing.

Our Keyboard Checker is the perfect diagnostic. Press the suspect key slowly and watch the event log: a single press that produces two events confirms chatter, while a press that fails to register points to a dead or obstructed switch. Diagnose first, then fix.
