How to Clean a Mechanical Keyboard Safely
Dust, crumbs, and grime kill feel and reliability. A proper clean restores your board to new.
Start by unplugging the keyboard and photographing the layout so you can replace keycaps correctly later. Use a keycap puller to lift each cap straight up, working in sections. Drop the caps into warm soapy water to soak while you tackle the exposed board.
With the caps off, tip the board upside down and give it a shake, then use compressed air to blast dust out from around the switches. A soft brush and cotton swabs lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol handle the stubborn grime on the plate. Never soak the circuit board itself.
Dry everything thoroughly before reassembly, especially the keycaps, which can trap water inside. Once the board and caps are completely dry, reseat each cap firmly and reconnect. A deep clean every few months keeps your switches crisp and your board looking sharp.
