Understanding Keyboard Switch Types: Linear, Tactile, Clicky

Red, brown, and blue switches are not just colors. They define how every keypress feels and sounds.

Linear switches, often colored red, move straight down with no bump and no click. They are smooth and fast, favored by gamers and typists who dislike interruption in their keystroke. Because nothing tells you when the key actuates, some new users bottom out hard until they learn the travel.

Tactile switches, typically brown, add a small bump at the actuation point. That bump is a gentle signal that the key has registered, letting you lift your finger a fraction earlier and type with more control. Many consider tactile switches the best all-round choice for mixed work.

Clicky switches, usually blue, pair that tactile bump with an audible click. They are enormously satisfying and great for feedback, but the noise makes them a poor fit for offices and shared rooms. Test all three with our Keyboard Checker feel in mind before you commit.
