The Art of Typing Without Looking at the Screen

Advanced typists can even type with their eyes closed. Here is why the skill is worth building.

Touch typing frees you from looking at the keyboard, but a further level of mastery lets you type while reading from a separate source document without glancing at the screen at all. Transcriptionists and secretaries rely on exactly this ability every day.

Building it requires trust in your muscle memory and your error sense. Skilled typists can often feel when they have made a mistake by the rhythm alone, without needing to see it on screen, and they correct by instinct. This feel develops only with heavy practice.

You can train toward it by occasionally typing a familiar passage with the monitor dimmed or your eyes closed. It is disorienting at first, but it ruthlessly exposes any lingering reliance on visual feedback and pushes your muscle memory to stand entirely on its own.
