Mastering the Number Row Without Looking

Mira Chen 2 min read2026-04-19

The number row is where most touch typists cheat and glance down. Here is how to conquer it.

The number row sits far from the home row, which is exactly why it is so hard to reach reliably. Each number has a dedicated finger: the same finger that handles the letters in its column simply stretches up. Four is left index, seven is right index, and so on outward.

Practice numbers in meaningful chunks rather than random strings. Typing phone numbers, dates, and prices mirrors the real patterns you will encounter and makes the drill less tedious. Say each number aloud as you type it to reinforce the finger-to-digit link.

Accept that the number row will always be slightly slower than the letters for most people. The goal is not blazing speed but reliable accuracy without looking down, so your flow is never broken when a figure appears mid-sentence.
