Keyboard Ghosting and NKRO Explained

S. Nakamura 2 min read2026-05-01

Ever pressed several keys and had one silently ignored? That is ghosting, and NKRO is the cure.

Key ghosting occurs when a keyboard cannot register certain combinations of simultaneously pressed keys, causing one or more presses to be dropped. It stems from how the keyboard's switch matrix is wired, where shared rows and columns can confuse the controller when too many keys in the same region fire at once.

N-key rollover, or NKRO, is the solution. A keyboard with full NKRO can register every key you press at the same time, no matter the combination, because each switch is electrically isolated or diode-protected. Gamers and fast typists benefit because rapid overlapping keystrokes never get lost.

You can test rollover directly in our Keyboard Checker. Hold down several keys at once and watch which ones light up. If some presses fail to register, your board has a rollover limit worth knowing about before a fast-paced game or typing sprint.
